A Sperry Merry Christmas

We had the BEST christmas ever this year! (I know I prob say that every year). We just had so much fun watching Jack open his presents, and Lily get buried in wrapping paper (which she loved, by the way). Two days before Christmas the concept of Santa finally clicked in Jack's little brain when we went to the mall to see him. Jack actually asked Santa for a "woody toy". It was awesome!

Thanksgiving: Sutton Style

We had an awesome/rediculous thanksgiving holiday! Awesome because we had lots of yummy foods to eat. And rediculous because we cooked TOO MUCH yummy food. We spent the holiday with my dad, and it seems like we're always over-doing everything we plan together. We could have feed four families with all that we cooked. Oh well, at least I don't have to cook for a few more days. BONUS!

Labor Day we hiked Grandeur Peak. It was an adventure with each of us carrying a kid! At the end of the hike I vowed I would never hike again....I probably will, just not toting up kid.

A Poo Poo Story

FYI: If you get offended easily by potty language, you prob shouldn't read this. (Actually, you probably shouldn't EVER read this blog :)

I started to potty train Jack at the beginning of July, but he was not liking sitting on the little potty with his bare bum. So I decided to wait a couple of months. Just yesterday, Jack all of the sudden started asking if he could go on the potty. I said SURE! Jack sat down and peed right then and there. WHOA! I was super excited so I put on his training pants and we began potty training officially. Jack peed in his potty the rest of that day (about 7 hours) and had to accidents...well, pee pee accidents....

Jack told me he had to poo poo so I sat him on the potty and he started pushing. I couldn't tell if he was faking or not. But I soon figured that out. All of the sudden he jumps up off the potty, takes off running and I see a poo makin' it's way out! What happens next? As soon as he hits the carpet that little (or big I should say), poo poo made it's way out and plopped right onto mommy's new carpet. Nice. Great timing Jack. Needless to say, Jack did the same thing today, so I think he's got weird issues with pooing on the potty. We'll get there.

Jack turned two on Saturday and boy did he have a blast! He had a party, went swimming in our little kid pool, had a BBQ with my family, and not to mention THE FIREWORKS! I mean seriously, what a day to have a birthday. The day before is Pioneer Day, so fireworks are legal to light off on his big day! AND this year, Pioneer Day was on a Sunday so a lot of people, including us, were lighting fireworks off on Saturday night. He totally loved it.

A New York Minute

I have to say, I would never raise my kids in a place like this, but it was fun to visit and, of course, see the sites. People acted like they never saw babies ever in their life, they would stop us just to look at the kids (and to take pictures of them occasionally---creepers). I would say everyone should come see this place, it's incredible, it's like a different country.

The place where we stayed was just around the corner literally from Wall Street.

We found this little urban park with a splash pool and sand for Jack to play in and he loved it.

While John and I were at Universal Studios, we stopped and had caricatures drawn of us. When I first saw it, I didn't think it resembled us in the slightest bit.
When we got home, I watched Jack pick up the picture, laugh, and then point at John and say "Daddy!" I couldn't believe he could tell who it was and see the humor in it. I pointed at the drawing of myself and asked him who it was and he said "Mama!" I must admit I was a little disappointed to learn that, yes, we must actually look like these freaks in the drawing.

Lily looked so beautiful in all white. I dressed her up in the blessing outfit that I wore on my blessing day. The only thing that wasn't mine was her hair flower, which I made (I felt like the bonnet that came with the dress seemed a little dated).

Keep in mind, this was only my second time snowboarding in the last three years...and naturally, I'm not so great at getting off the lifts anyway...

So when I was getting all bundled up in my snowboarding getup this morning, I forgot to put the shoulder straps up on my snowboarding pants so they were just hanging freely behind me. I'm on the chairlift, second run of the day, Kyler and John on either side of me. I lean forward to get off the chair lift, but there's a small problem... I can't get off the chair. The next thing I know, I'm suddenly suspended in the air by my britches as the chair lift is still going! One of the shoulder straps of my pants is caught on the back of the chair. I'm yelling stop while laughing (deep, deep down inside), and getting wedgied by my pants as I hang there, the laughing stock at the top of the mountain. Kyler and John sure got a kick outta it. I can only imagine how awesome it looked. Oh yeah. When I finally freed myself and TRIED to get out of the way of the chairlift, I totally biffed it and the chair lift had to be stopped again...of course...I mean...IT'S ME. Geez.

If only getting off the chairlift was this exciting all the time, maybe someone would have filmed it and we would be sitting in the front row at America's Funniest Home Videos RIGHT NOW! It's ok, there's always a next time...and there probably will be with my luck :)

Now that Lily is two weeks old we finally feel like we're adjusting to having two kids! The first week was...well, a bit rough. But I think we're catching on and it's been lots of fun!

We went to the doctor this morning and found out she is 7 1/2 pounds, still 20 inches, and her head is 36 cm (up two cm from birth). I was surprised to hear she had only gained a half of a pound in two weeks since Jack gained a pound in the first week! But, Lily is being bottle fed which makes a big difference I guess.

Jack is getting used to having a baby around all the time. He has been getting a little jealous here and there so I share Lily with Jack's buddy, Bear, while Jack and I play.

Jack has been having a blast with all the Christmas activities that have been going on. Last year he was too young to really get to experience Christmas time. Here's what he's been enjoying about the holidays this year...

Christmas Lights!
He loved the lights at temple square and he still points at our Christmas tree in amazement whenever we turn the lights on.

Santa! ...not the reaction we were hoping for, but the one we expected I guess...

Santa was ok from a distance, but just about the scariest thing if he was touching him.

And since we felt like such terrible parents subjecting little Jack to such terror, we made it up to him...

Gift wrapping! With all the boxes that have been laying around the house from our holiday purchases, Jack has been loving his new play places. Especially the ones he doesn't really fit in...

Holiday treats! Jack made a gingerbread train with Grandma...his favorite part of course was tearing it apart and sucking off the frosting.

Snowmen so big they'll give a kid nightmares! I don't know if Jack was as impressed with this one as we were...but you have to admit, it's friggin awesome!

Jack has been practicing being reverent and folding his arms during prayers.

(Just as a side note--we have only been giving Jack his binky when we want him to be quiet.)

Last night John was putting Jack to bed and they were saying night time prayers. Jack was folding his arms and staring at daddy as he says the prayer. Suddenly John realized that Jack took his binky out and was trying to shove it into his mouth.

I guess it was time for daddy to be quiet.

Little Cottonwood Camping Trip!

Considering everything (freezing cold weather, not being allowed to crawl in the dirt, Mom forgetting his shoes...and much more) Jack did fantastic on his first camp out.

He tried to go off on hikes all by himself...and then down hill in his walker. When mommy ran to catch him...he laughed.

But how could I be mad at this adorable face.

Watching the smoke was one Jack's favorite things.

Hiking by the river was fun (especially because John carried Jack) while I carried our other little one. :)

The mornings were cold so Jack bundled up and snuggled with Grandpa.

And of course, the food cooked on the fire was awesome!

A Look at Peanut Number Two

We got our first ultrasound of our little bun in the oven! We weren't expecting to get one this early so it was way exciting! Obviously we didn't find out the gender yet because the fetus is only 11 1/2 weeks old...but in eight weeks we'll know!

The black blobby thing in the middle is the uterus and the little white peanut in the middle is the baby with it's head to the left hand side and body to the right.

My due date is set at March 30th.

Anniversary Numero Tres

Here we are again celebrating yet another year of marriage! John and I took a break to celebrate in Heber, Midway, and Park City while my family watched Jack!

Here are some of the things we got to do:

-We visited Midway and went through the shops and saw this awesome war memorial on a hill.

-Swim in the Homestead Crater!

-We ate at the Hub in Heber (and also Dairy Keen but the Hub is much much better).

We stayed at the Holiday Inn in Heber. We also had a successful day of shopping at the Park City Outlets--nothing is better than that. Oh yeah, and John got pulled over again, and got out of another ticket....AGAIN. Crazy kid.

When we got back home we made chocolate covered strawberries that were delish!

I'm sure glad that I have treasured everyday with Jack this past year. What a big accomplishment--turning ONE! Yea, Jack, we love you so much!

Friday was his actual birthday, so we as a little family celebrated in our own way...

Yesterday John and I were at the gym and Jack was at the little kids club. When we were leaving the girls there asked if Jack could have a sucker. Maybe I'm a sad excuse for a mother but it was SO funny watching Jack get covered in that slimey Blue Rasberry sucker! The best part was that he totally learned that he could share it. So I would open my mouth and he would give me a lick, them one for himself, then one for me...I could just kiss his head right off!!!

Jack is celebrating 8 months of being alive with 8 teeth! I can't believe he is sprouting that many already, the kid is hard core! The last four were the very front set on the top and they all came in at once.
He's not crawling yet but we're hoping he will soon. He manages to get across a room very slowly on his butt. But you couldn't tell by watching it. It's like watching a flower bloom, if you watch you can't tell anything is happening, but if you leave and go see where he is after 10 minutes he's nowhere near where he started.

Yesterday I hit the jackpot thanks to my G, Vanessa. I was just about to leave to pick up some stuff at Walmart for Jack when she called. She was at the Walmart on 114th where there were shoes for a buck! I checked the Walmart at my house...nothin. So I rushed over to that one and picked up seven pairs!

Jack's First REAL Library Trip

Jack has come to the library with us several times but this time he was old enough to sit and look at books! So I bundled him all up and we went for a stroll to our little Midvale library!

He read the books with the extra thick pages since tearing paper is one of his favorite past-times. The kids section had a few kid pools just filled with books so that's where we sat and read! Jack kinda figured out how to turn the pages once I separated them for him. What a stud!

Our V-Day!

We had an awesome V-day! John and I went on a hot date to a Mexican restaurant that is now one of our favorites. It's called La Cocina and everthing was good--pina coladas, nachos, and the main courses were huge so we ended up eating only a few bites!
I got John some fishing stuff to help his dream to be a pro fisherman come true. I also got him Coach Carter, a movie he loves.Now the best part...
I thought John did such an amazing job putting thought into my present. He went to Michael's (yeah, the craft store) and he got a bunch of these flat wooden hearts and he turned them into coupons I can redeem all year long. It stinks the picture didn't turn out well enough to read what they say, but they're GOOD coupons. Like one free ANYTHING! I'm thinking about asking for a car for that one :) One girls night out, all expenses paid. One week of John doing dishes AND laundry, now that's a good one...you get the point. John is so awesome, I just love him to death.

As for the little man, I made him some little felt car shoes (on my craft blog) and we got him a sweet pair of britches!

So I am way behind on updating this blog but I'll sum everything up...

First, we moved in temporarily with John's brother Russ and our sister-in-law Vanessa. Our little apartment got a bunch of water damage and so it's being worked on right now. It's been awesome hanging out with them pretty much 24/7!

Jack is six months old now and he's doing great (besides this nasty cough that doesn't seem to go away). John and I are very proud of his chubbiness!

John and I are doing great too. Just yesterday we got to go out to La Caille with John's work. It was really fun to go to such a fancy (not to mention ridiculously expensive) restaurant.

Also, Vanessa and I are very proud of our craft blog! We are getting lots of traffic and being featured on other big-wig crafter's blogs. Thanks to everyone who has been following!

And lastly, I took these pictures of Emma, Jack's cousin, and Jack playing together. Anna was asleep and they were just so adorable! I'm really sad I can't get all of them to post, I don't know what's wrong...

My Birthday!!

For my birthday what I wanted more than anything was SLEEP. So John and I stayed at a hotel and I got to sleep for 11 hours and sit in a nice hot tub! Oh it was wonderful!

My mom watched Jack overnight for us, and when we went to see him he was excited and helped me open my presents!

I have been neglecting my duties as a parent....I haven't blogged about Jack since Christmas. Shame on me! Jack will be six months old in about two weeks, and he's little personality is developing so fast. He's been jabbering and talking (not saying any real words of course). He's been exploring things by scratching them and listening to the sound it makes! It's so cute :) And best of all he's getting REALLY good at sitting up on his own. It just seemed like one day all of the sudden he was sitting up!

Christmas and baby shower planning have kept me SUPER busy! It's good to be back and blogging!

John, Jack, and I had our family pictures taken yesterday so we're excited to get them posted up here next week when we get them. We finally figured out the best way to get awesome pictures for cheap! I'm sure you've seen the JC Penny coupons for portraits everywhere, they seriously are everywhere. If you cut out the one that is $3.99 per sheet (4-3.5x5, 2- 5x7, 1-8x10, 8-wallets, ect), you can pick as many poses as you want (and they take a lot) and it turns out super cheap but you get lots of variety! John and I got taken last time we got Jack's pictures, but now we know!

Friday the 13th and Turning 60!

We had another awesome cake weekend with Friday the 13th and John's mom turning 60!
For Friday the 13th, we made a grave site with a headstone (dedicated to Michael Jackson) with our buds Jenny and Derek Williams. And to top off the night we spooked ourselves out by watching some freaky episodes of Lost (the boys don't seem to think it's scary, but Jenny and I disagree).

Then on Saturday morning, Vanessa and I challenged ourselves by attempting to make a cake that looked like a book since John's mom loves to read. We wrote out a quote from The Blue Sword, one of her favorite books. I think it turned out alright, but the best part was the fun we had...and trying not to cuss when we messed up on the writing...

The Little Man Becomes a Real Man

Jack learns so much everyday, it's crazy how fast he's turning into a little man!

He hates it if he isn't sitting up and most of the time he wants to be sitting up supporting himself. He's getting there!

He's learned to blow bubbles with his spit...to put things in his mouth...

He's trying to hold his own bottle which is so dang cute!He likes to watch cartoons, here he's watching "Super WHY", but he holds a special place in his heart for the Simpsons. (Go ahead, call me a bad parent).

It's just all so fast! Before we know it, he'll be shaving his own back hair....

Halloween was very eventful this year! We got to carve pumpkins with Quincy and Jessica, and we also got to have a Feast in a Pumkin with them (which was way good by the way!)

We went to our ward's trunk-or-treat and we also went trick-or-treating with Russ, Vanessa, and the girls, and Shelly as the Wizard of OZ!

Our little Jack got his three month pictures last week! We were really pleased with how they turned out, so pleased that we paid 20 times more than we walked in expecting to pay. It was totally worth it and it was SO fun!

Winco is the grocery store we would ALWAYS go to in Boise! Everyone knew it was the cheapest, so I decided to do a little sample comparison of prices between the two on food.
Check it out...

I only buy food items when I go to Winco because for non-food essentials, Walmart is the same or cheaper (because they believe in slave labor, child labor, etc. )

Anyways, Winco is AWESOME! If anything, you should at least go and check it out. I'm sure you'll be happy with what you find. They have bulk items too, and lots of em'! So you can get cereal, candy, spices, dog food...anything in bulk pretty much! That's my favorite part!

I think this is one of my favorite cakes that I've done! My mom loves flowers so this was for her birthday. I did another one of a half of a basketball with Vanessa, but it ended up looking deflated because I had to peel the first layer of fondant off due to a massive crack.

Good job keeping your eyes open in this one, mom! :)

Tummy Time to the Max!

So Jack is usually a happy baby. He loves to sit and watch what's going on, and eat, and he used to love tummy time when he was first born.

Then a few weeks later he decided he hated it and he would just lay there and scream with his face in the ground. But NOW, he loves it thanks to the Boppy pillow **(registered trademark)!

Jack had his two month check up yesterday and everything went really well! Jack weighed in at 13.5 pounds which puts him in the 90th percentile...my chunker:) He measured at 24 inches so he's grown five inches in two months! His head circumference is still in the 40th percentile which it was at birth so his head isn't as massive as I've thought:) He took the shots as well as a baby could...he screamed for about 30 seconds and then he calmed right down and fell asleep. He has been grumpy which is to be expected, I feel bad for the little guy:( But at least he's super duper healthy, I'm grateful for that.

The Tragic Tales of Nicholette's Phones

So as I was sitting pondering memories with my past cell phones, I realized that I have ALWAYS had the worst luck with phones! Not only is this going to reveal how incredible STUPID and absent minded I can be, but some of you may deny that you know me forever...

Let's start with my first phone...I think I had the best luck with that one, it lasted a year and then I wanted a color screen (could you blame me?)
So I traded it in for this beaut...

...which unfortunately was short lived. I was at work as a Merry Maid in Boise and I was talking with one hand, and scrubbing a bathroom floor with my other hand. Afterwards, I must have thought it was the sponge because after a frantic hunt to find my phone, it soon came flying out of the bucket with the mop water into the toilet. Great.

So then I can't remember what I got to replace it but a few more phones came and gone and then I got a hot pink motorola razor...ooo I loved that phone, I think it was my favorite (but don't tell the others).

It looked something like this...

We had some good times, which included a night at the International Cinema on BYU Campus where I saw Supersize Me for the first time... It was there that Old Pinkie was stolen by a Laotian He-She (I don't know if it was a guy or a girl). And that He-She racked up my phone bill to $4k which I almost had to pay before John ripped the T-mobile people a new one. So that was fun.

Then there was the greener, thinner version of Old Pinkie...
I can't seem to remember what I did to that one, but I'm sure it was very sad. I do remember every two seconds it screamed "I'm dying" which was annoying and the screen wouldn't dim. (I did drop it a lot when I was biking--that may have something to do with it). Couldn't go anywhere without my charger.

And then it was back to Nokia... fiftly three somethin'...

She only lasted about a month, probably not even that and then I left it in my pants pockets after attempting to exercise and I washed it with a load of whites. Bummer.

So after that I hopped on craigslist and bought a cool slider phone from this girl who turned out to be a criminal...

not really but she lied to me and said there was nothing wrong with the phone and I found out the ringer and speakerphone wouldn't work. I paid $50 for that hunk-a-junk! But it's ok because that one just got washed with my sheets yesterday!

And now I'm phoneless.
Maybe I should stick with a landline...with a cord.

Jack's First BYU Game!

So I was mostly excited to take Jack to the game because we decided to stop and get him a little person BYU shirt and he looked just like a little stud muffin! Jack was so good during the game and he handled all the angry yells from the fans really well (the refs sucked big time). I think I took close to a bazillion pictures but I'll spare you...

my best friend's wedding*

This was such a happy day for me! My best friend getting married to an awesome guy...it's the best:) I balled at the sealing, I think I cried harder than the bride's mom (p.s. tears of joy btw). I had a really fun time making their wedding slideshow, engagement interview, and filming at the wedding..it's going to be a bling video! Anywho, Jack was such a stud at the wedding in his dress clothes, but we were bummed because we couldn't find his tie and we're really mad because we looked everywhere for a little-man tie and finally found one at Savers. Hopefully another generous person will donate one soon:) John was such a sport letting me run around and film while he watched the Jack Attack!

Jack's New Trick?

So I'm guessing he just got lucky, but yesterday morning I lied Jack on our bed so that I could go get him a blanket. Then, when I turned back around he was completely on his side and continuing to roll over onto his stomach. I know what your thinking, and no, I did not lie him down on his side. He was completely 100% on his back! I have no idea how this happened but I'm guessing it was just a fluke...but it was weird to watch.

It's been forrrreeeeevvvveeerrr since I posted last, so I've repented and I'm catching up. We are settled into our new apartment and it's great to not be living out of boxes like hobos. We have made a few cakes, one for Vanessa's birthday and one just for the heck of it.

John and I decided to pick up a new hobby making fondant cakes thanks to our awesome friends Quincy and Jessica! This is the second cake we have made together and it was for a bridal shower that I threw for one of my many beloved Jennys.

We made it pink, white, and black because those are going to be her wedding colors. The pink and white frosting we flavored with coconut extract, and the "black" was more of a super dark brown that we added dark cocoa to for color and flavor. The cocoa made the fondant a little more brittle so it what somewhat difficult to work with. It's rediculous but black food coloring is hard to find! It's ok though, we still had the time of our life!

Two Years and One Month

Jack officially made it through his first month of life on Sunday!
But for the first time in a very long time, this blog is not just about Jack!...

John and I also celebrated our two year anniversary on Sunday! Thanks to our awesome friends Quincy and Jessica, we learned how to make a fondant cake. It may look like dump but we were pretty proud of it for our first one. The best part about it was that John loved making it and wants to make more with me! Only Quincy has that kind of power.

On Saturday, I woke up and decided we needed to go celebrate our anniversary by going to Lagoon, so we did. We took Jack and drove toward SLC and called for a babysitter on the way...so inconsiderate, but luckily my mama loves me!

Grunter and Lamby's Secrets Revealed

This weekend we got to go on an awesome family mountain retreat up at Lamb's Canyon. John's family has a cabin up there so we went for the day to get away. Really, it was like the 2nd worst day of my life because I got fever after fever the whole day and by the time we got back to town I was at 103.5...so this mommy didn't get any cute pictures of Jack for the blog. But, cool cabin.

We ended up staying in Salt Lake so I could get a few super strong antibiotic IV treatments and then we came home Sunday night.

Well, on the way home we stopped in Lehi to visit my mom and sister. My mom was holding Jack and admiring his good looks:) when he started making his usual grunts. Then my mom says, "oh, he sounds like you did when you were this small Nicholette. Oh, that's why I called you 'Lamby' because you sounded like a little baby lamb!"

WHAT?!

First of all, the grunts sound like a baby pig and second of all...why did THAT have to come from me...of all things.

The Real World

So Monday was our first day in the "real world"! No classes, no homework, just taking care of a baby and working hard for the monies! We celebrated Monday night by going to Chili's and taking Jack with us and he just slept the whole time:)
But to be completely honest, we're both already pooped and it's only Tuesday! Jack seems to have somehow mixed up night and day because he thinks it's ok to be cute and awake from about 2 a.m. until 6 a.m., and then he sleeps in the day.

But seriously, how do you keep a newborn awake when you don't want them to sleep? They don't play, they don't care if you're talking to them...or if you dress them up or take them for a walk. They sleep through all of it. All I have to say is, it's a good thing he's so darn cute or else mama might not be so forgiving!

The Many Faces of Jack

Watching Jack sleep is our FAVORITE! He always makes really funny faces so I'm guessing newborns can kind of dream. Sometimes he makes really sad faces and pouts out his lower lip like he's going to cry and sometimes he'll smile over and over again (probably dreaming that mama was producing chocolate milk...that would be sweet).

Jack is such a sweet baby. We have loved our little addition to the family and all the joy he has brought to us. I have found that being a mommy has turned me to an even bigger softy. I find myself looking at Jack and getting teary-eyed because I love him so much! It's been fun watching John with Jack, he is a very cute dad!

Jack is one week old and he is doing so well...besides the fact that he had to get circumcised today. All I have to say is, I am speechless and scared for life from watching what Jack had to go through.

On a happier note, Jack is growing and healthy. He has gained 9 ounces already and grown an inch and a half! I guess that means mom doesn't have to worry that he's not getting enough! His tummy time is going great too! He has a strong neck and legs!

It's fun getting to know this little guy! He has cute little quirky things he does like get the hiccups when he gets scared. When he's concentrating on something that he's looking at he puckers up his lips like he wants to kiss you!!
